Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability
Teacher educators educate new teachers, create teacher education curricula, contribute to textbooks as well as educate and certify headmasters, principals, and school administrators, among others.
As lead Agency for the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD, 2005 - 2014) UNESCO recognizes their strategic importance in reorienting education systems to address sustainability.
Representatives from teacher education institutions from over 50 countries are gathering at UNESCO Headquarters from 19 - 21 May for the International Symposium for Reorienting Teacher Education towards Sustainability.
The meeting of the International Network will combine plenary sessions on current ESD topics with break-out sessions in which participants share their experiences reorienting teacher education to address sustainability. Participants will also share experiences concerning creating and maintaining national networks of teacher education institutions.
Since the establishment in 2000 of the UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education to address Sustainability (at York University, Toronto, Canada), the International Network has steadily grown. Today it comprises 75 institutions from 60 different countries.
