World Press Freedom Day celebrated in Lesotho

The Lesotho Chapter of the Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) is organizing a debate of the theme of this year’s World Press Freedom Day, Freedom of Information: The Right to Know.
The celebrations of World Press Freedom Day will again take place in rural Lesotho, in the Morija village, in order to sensitise rural citizens on their fundamental right of freedom of expression. They include the debate that will foster reflection and exchange of ideas on freedom of information to advance empowerment, transparency, accountability and the fight against corruption.
Media practitioners, media activists, members of local organizations and local authorities will discuss the importance of freedom of information as an integral part of freedom of expression and its contribution to democratic governance. The debate will also focus on the key obstacles that the effective exercise of the right to know faces in today’s digitalized world.
The commemoration of the World Press Freedom Day in Lesotho is organized by MISA Lesotho in partnerships with the National Commission of Lesotho for UNESCO, the Transformation Resource Centre (TRC), the Women and Law in Southern Africa (WILSA), the Lesotho Council of NGOs and the Morija Community Council. This activity takes place within the framework of UNESCO’s continued effort to promote freedom of expression and universal access to information.
