Kiribati workshop agrees on information sharing

Representatives of Government, Parliament, civil service and media agreed to improve the sharing of public information.
The workshop, held from 14 to 18 May 2007 in Tarawa, Kiribati, was funded by UNESCO's Office in Apia at the request of the Kiribati Government.
A number of practical outcomes were agreed upon and a more positive relationship has been established between these important branches of the community. In a final Communiqué, the participants stressed the great value of improving the flow of information both from, and within, the Government and the Parliament.
The media adopted a draft Code of Ethics and the Kiribati Islands Media Association (KIMA) will soon be established to help improve media standards and provide a range of services to its members and the public.
The meeting created a Core Group with representatives from all the sectors to guide the implementation of the recommendations of the workshop, which outline the following:

- The Government and its ministries should consider broader information sharing guidelines.
- Government and Legislative Office websites are to be created as resource tools to promote better flow of information.
- Government ministries should determine what material is public and explore better ways for people to access it in a convenient manner.
- Communication training has to be set up with the support of development partners and local funding sources.
- The Government should improve the flow of information through the measures such as: establishing and expanding information units and ministry radio programmes; using fact sheets for ministries to improve communication between and within the them, and with the public; expanding and confirming the draft Code of Ethics, adopted at the workshop; developing a draft Constitution for KIMA to be formally registered, etc.
