International conference to mark anniversary of Chile's Transparency Law

UNESCO's Office in Santiago organizes the international conference on the Implementation of Chile's Transparency Law and the Right to Access Public Information. The conference will be hosted by the Chilean Council for Transparency at the Catholic University's Extension Centre in Santiago from 20 to 21 April 2010. It will mark the first anniversary of the enactment of Chile's Transparency Law.

The conference will provide stakeholders with an opportunity to reflect on Chile's Transparency Law, its importance, possibilities to improve it, and the best use that can be made of it by the civil society and journalists. The event also aims to create a space for the exchange of experiences among different actors in the transparency field, as well as for the dissemination of research studies that support the implementation of the right to access information. It is conceived not only as a tool for governmental modernisation but also as an incentive for Chilean institutions, both public and private, to develop competency and to increase existing capabilities for the implementation of the Law.

The UNESCO Office in Santiago joined its efforts with the United States National Security Archives, the Chilean Centre for Investigative Journalism (CIPER) and the National Press Association of Chile (ANP) to organize this conference. The participation of representatives of Canada, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway and the United States will enhance the event through sharing lessons learned in the field of access to public information in other countries.

The conference programme is available on the Council for Transparency website: <a target="_blank" href="http://www.consejotransparencia.cl/prontus_seminario/site/artic/20100225/pags/20100225143632.html">click here</a>.

The Council for Transparency is an autonomous corporation, whose main task is to monitor the fulfilment of the Law of Transparency of the Public Function and Access of Information, which was promulgated on 20 August 2008 and came into force in April 2009. The Council promotes the consolidation of a governance model that deepens democracy and encourages confidence in the civil service on the basis of participation and citizen control.
