UNESCO hosts Caribbean Media Conference in Trinidad and Tobago
The Caribbean region commemorates World Press Freedom Day with the annual Media Conference, which is being held on 3 and 4 May in Trinidad and Tobago. About 60 delegates are attending the event to examine media issues from global and regional perspectives.
The two-day Conference is hosted by UNESCO, the Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU), the Caribbean News Agency (CANA), the Association of Caribbean Media Workers (ACM), the Media Association of Trinidad and Tobago (MATT), and the Trinidad and Tobago Publishers and Broadcasting Association (TTPBA).
A representative of the Trinidad and Tobago Ministry of Information welcomed the delegates to the Conference, which was opened by Isidro Fernandez-Aballi, UNESCO's Communication and Information Advisor for the Caribbean region. The key address was delivered by the former media magnate Ken Gordon.
The Conference gathered approximately 60 delegates from English-, French- and Dutch-speaking Caribbean countries to discuss the following topics:
<li>capacity-building of Caribbean media;
<li>editorial independence and quality public service broadcasting;
<li>transforming media in a digital age;
<li>science and education journalism; and
<li>freedom of information.
Jean Claude Luis, a regional consultant with the Panos Institute in Haiti, will give a picture of the media landscape in that country before and after the last January earthquake.
