Engaging Local Communities

Building on the fruitful collaborative experience of the project’s first phase activities, the museum professionals from the three countries are further implementing innovative public engagement programmes to explore modalities of associating local communities in museum activities as active partners.

This phase is aimed at increasing the relevance of museums for local populations, especially through innovative participative projects with a greater association of the museum professionals. As a whole, the public outreach programmes would increase access to quality cultural experience for various public and increasing capacities of project stakeholders in heritage and museum management.

Cambodia

The four participating Cambodian museums (Preah Norodom Sihanouk-Angkor Museum, Angkor National Museum, National Museum of Cambodia and Preah Vihear Eco Global Museum) focused on the Angkor World Heritage Site and to follow the Photovoice method in developing and designing an exhibition with the active participation of seven villages in and around the site (Roluos, Banteay Srei, Rohal, Kor Ovlok, North Sras Srang and Kok Thnot). In Autumn 2014, two workshops were organized on photography and text writing, in preparation for the exhibition development and launch in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

The exhibition focuses especially on the role of Khmer women in the transmission of immaterial culture,  and is developed around four themes: clothing, agriculture, local belief as well as transmission of immaterial culture.
