Director-General establishes UNESCO-Cousteau Chair with the University of Rhode Island, USA

The Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura, today established the UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair in Global Coastal Assessment at the University of Rhode Island, USA, during a signing ceremony held at UNESCO Headquarters.
"This new Chair will join a global network of UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Chairs working on effective coastal management. This programme is a fitting tribute and continuation of the work to which Jacques-Yves Cousteau devoted his life to," stated the Director-General.

The UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Chair in Global Coastal Assessment at the University of Rhode Island will work to synthesize scientific data relating to the health of coastal ecosystems, analyse the health of coastal areas and assess and propose policy and management strategies for targeted regions. It will also work to develop mitigation strategies and educational materials while providing support to applied solutions for environmental problems.

The UNESCO-Cousteau Ecotechnie Programme was established as a collaborative effort between the late Jacques-Yves Cousteau and UNESCO in 1994. The objective of the programme is to promote interdisciplinary education, research and policy making in the field of the environment and development. The network now numbers 11 participating Ecotechnie Chairs in Argentina, Bahrain, Belgium, Egypt, India, Lebanon, Moldova, Romania, Sweden, Vietnam and the United States.

The signing ceremony was attended by Ms Louise V. Oliver, Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the United States of America to UNESCO, Dr Robert Carothers, President of the University of Rhode Island and Ms Francine Cousteau, President of "Equipe Cousteau".
