17-06-2009 (Sudan) Workshop on Desertification in the Teaching Curricula in the General Education: "Soil and Water Conservation for Our Future Security", by UNESCO Chair in Desertification, the University of Khartoum (Sudan)

Organized on the occasion of the World Day of Desertification, on 17th June 2009, in Sayed/ Sir Al-Khatim Al-Khalifa Hall, Ministry of Education

RECOMMENDATIONS

1.It is recommended that the National Center for Curricula and Educational Research shall form a Committee of Specialists in education, soil science and desertification domains to review the papers presented in the workshop, prepare specific contents for the topics on desertification, which were proposed to be introduced in the General Education Curricula (GEC) and harmonize by modification and/or amendment of some parts in the curricula with the correct scientific concepts and methods.

2. The introduced topics should include some information about the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

3. Topics and field activities pertaining to combating desertification should be introduced in the GEC.

4. A nursery should be established in each school to serve two purposes, namely, student training and distribution of seedlings to their families and the community.

5. Each school should be provided with a water tank to facilitate watering of plants.

6. Financial support for introducing theoretical and practical teaching of desertification in GEC may be one of the objectives of the National Desertification Fund passed recently by the National Council (Parliament).

7. Establishment of Student Societies for Combating Desertification in both basic and secondary schools should be encouraged.

8. The UNESCO Chair of Desertification is required to organize talks and exhibitions on desertification in the schools.

9. The Chair should enrich the school libraries with booklets on desertification.

10. Schools should be encouraged to celebrate the World Day for Combating Desertification.

11. The Chair should prepare a brochure for plants locally used for establishing shelterbelts.
