08-02-2010 (Switzerland)-International Scientific Conference on Technologies for Development, by UNESCO Chair in Technologies for Development, École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne

Following the new scientific orientation of the UNITWIN/UNESCO Chairs Programme, the Conference aims to contribute in the long term to the creation and reinforcement of a critical mass in key development disciplines and fields in developing countries, as well to establish poles of excellence by encouraging South-South cooperation.

The Conference will be the first major manifestation organised within the framework of the UNESCO Chair in Technologies for Development held by the Cooperation@epfl unit. It aims at promoting research in the area of technologies and innovation in order to ensure that they are adapted to the framework of developing countries. The Conference is designed as a platform to increase awareness of state-of-the-art technologies and their potential as well as to promote innovation that advances development.

The Conference is advocating an interdisciplinary approach based on international scientific cooperation and will focus on 4 main priority fields: Habitat and Cities; ICTs for Environment; Disaster Risk Reduction and Sustainable Energy Production.

Confirmed keynote speakers will be: Prof. Mohamed H.A. Hassan (Executive Director of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World) and Prof. Melissa Leach (Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex).
