Mission

UNESCO responds to climate change through education within the framework of UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD). Climate change education should lead to an increased understanding of key concepts related to sustainability.

With the Climate Change Education for Sustainable Development programme UNESCO aims at making CCE a more central and visible part of the international response to climate change. The program should help people understand the impact of global warming today and increase "climate literacy" among young people. It also looks to encourage changes in attitudes and behaviour needed to develop more sustainable consumption patterns and contribute to the mitigation of climate change.  CCE for sustainable development should further prepare children and young people to adapt to the changes that climate change will bring.
