Zambesi River Project (ZRP)

Proposed at a Sub-regional Training Workshop on Human Rights Education in Malawi in 1995 at the Zimbabwe Children’s Peace Festival in 1995 and further refined by the UNESCO Harare Office, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe were invited in 1998 to participate with both elementary and secondary schools in the ZRP:. Malawi was designated as the Regional ZRP Co-ordinator.

A common programme of study was agreed upon with emphasis on studying the environmental issues associated with the river and promoting human rights education and intercultural learning among the participating countries. The ZRP led to the development of a series of training modules on such issues as: water management in the Zambezi River Basin; natural and cultural heritage for the Zambezi River Basin, human rights and democracy. A ZRP Newsletter was also published.
