![]() Highlighting the fact that the Caribbean region is regarded as second only to southern Africa in the spread of HIV/AIDS, Professor Nettleford acknowledged that the Chair would contribute enormously to curbing this rise. The Caribbean region’s healthcare delivery has improved tremendously over the years but with the AIDS pandemic, there is a danger of losing all the advances made. “We have the doctors”, he said, “now we need the preventive measures that only education can give”. Mr Cox conveyed the pleasure of the Commonwealth Secretariat to be engaged in this joint venture with UNESCO; which should contribute significantly to ensuring the achievement, in the Caribbean region, of the Millenium Development Goals in the field of education. The UNESCO-Commonwealth Regional Chair in Education and HIV/AIDS will be formally launched at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies (Barbados) on 21 October 2004. The launching ceremony will take place in the presence of Sir George Alleyne, Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Caribbean on HIV/AIDS.
