The UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre -
What it Is and What it Does


The UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre is UNESCO’s specialised centre for technical and vocational education and training (TVET). It concentrates on providing technical backstopping to strengthen and upgrade TVET. It focuses on meeting the needs of developing countries, countries in transition and those in a post-conflict situation, especially youth, girls and women, and the disadvantaged.
Key Issues Addressed by the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre

Some of the main issues the Centre addresses are:
  • developing systems and providing support in TVET systems by promoting best and innovative practices in TVET
  • improving access to TVET
  • assuring quality of TVET
  • promoting sustainable development
  • supporting members in their fight against HIV/Aids, and
  • developing TVET in post-conflict countries.

Tools the Centre Uses to Achieve its Aims

The Centre uses tools that help involve experts and institutions worldwide, the five main tools being:
  • networking
  • knowledge-sharing and knowledge management
  • advisory services
  • training and human resources development, and
  • collaboration and partnerships (inter-agency collaboration).

Hosting in Bonn, Germany

In July 2000, UNESCO and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany signed an agreement for the hosting of an International Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training in Bonn, Germany. The official Inauguration Ceremony took place in April 2002.

United Nations Campus in Bonn

In February 2002, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan signed a contract to develop Bonn further to become a UN city. The former governmental and parliamentary quarter in Bonn is currently converted into a UN Campus, which also includes an international conference centre.
