Malawi joined UNESCO on October 27, 1964. The country is covered by the Organization's Sub-regional office in Harare, Zimbabwe. In the field of education, the Guidance, Counselling and Youth Development Centre was founded with the aim of strengthening the advice and guidance services for education in Africa.

Particular attention is paid to the issue of girls and to the fight against HIV and AIDS. As of September 2006, fifteen schools in Malawi are members of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
