Lebanon, a founding member state, joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946. The UNESCO Beirut Office, a regional office for education in the Arab states, opened in 1961.

It coordinates the implementation of regional educational programmes, and also acts as a cluster office which oversees the implementation of all UNESCO activities.

The country participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. This initiative aims to address the impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent the spread of HIV and support education systems related to HIV/AIDS learning environments.

As of September 2006, Lebanon has 46 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Projects Network (ASPnet).
