The Syrian Arab Republic, a founding member, joined UNESCO on November 16, 1946. It is covered by the UNESCO Office in Beirut, Lebanon.

The Syrian Arab Republic participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. This initiative aims to address the impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent the spread of HIV and support education systems related to HIV/AIDS learning environments. The country has one UNEVOC centre and 30 schools are in the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
