Yemen joined UNESCO April 2, 1962. The UNESCO Office Cairo represents the Organization in Yemen.

Yemen is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012). Yemen has one UNEVOC centre for technical and vocational training.

As of October 2006, thirteen schools in Yemen were members of the UNESCO Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
