Iraq

Iraq joined UNESCO on October 21, 1948. UNESCO’s Iraq office is temporarily sharing space with the UNESCO Office Amman in Jordan. Iraq has placed education at the heart of its cooperation with UNESCO. In 2004, The Organization sent books for students and for university libraries in Baghdad as well as to regional centres in Basra and Mosul.

Iraq is one of the 35 countries implementing the UNESCO Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE), a 10-year initiative aimed at achieving the goals of the United Nations Literacy Decade (2003-2012).
