Qatar joined UNESCO on January 27, 1972. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office Doha, in Qatar. Opened in 1976, the cluster office represents UNESCO in Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser al Missned, consort of the Emir of Qatar, is a UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education.

Her mission is to promote education for all children and to improve the quality of education worldwide.
