The People’s Republic of China joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946. The UNESCO Beijing Office began in 1984. The country holds eight chairs and there are two UNEVOC centres. Currently, China has 6 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Projects Network (ASPnet).

The International Research and Training Centre for Rural Education (INRULED), a collaboration between the People’s Republic of China and UNESCO, was created to examine the problem of rural education in China and to provide solutions. The People’s Republic of China is also an active UNESCO partner in the Education for All process.

The country participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. This initiative aims to address the impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent the spread of HIV and support education systems related to HIV/AIDS learning environments.
