Japan joined UNESCO on July 12, 1951. It is covered by the UNESCO Office in Beijing, China. In 1989, the Japanese government entrusted UNESCO with a fund, called the “Japanese Funds-in-Trust for the Preservation of World Cultural Heritage”.

Through the Trust Fund, Japan has lent its support to UNESCO activities in the field of education. Japan holds two UNESCO Chairs and has one UNEVOC centre. As of September, Japan has 18 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
