Viet Nam joined UNESCO on July 6, 1951. The establishment of the UNESCO Hanoi office further involved the country into a collaborative relationship with UNESCO. Viet Nam participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS. This initiative aims to address the impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent the spread of HIV and support education systems related to HIV/AIDS learning environments.

Viet Nam holds four UNESCO Chairs and the country is home to one UNEVOC centre. Currently, the country has 21 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).

Viet Nam is one of the eight countries which have volunteered to participate in the “One UN” pilot initiative. This will test how the UN family – with its many and diverse agencies - can deliver in a more coordinated way at country level.
