  • Pakistan has 6.5 million out-of-school children

Pakistan joined UNESCO on September 14, 1949. The country has a National Office in Islamabad. UNESCO cooperates with Pakistan within the E-9 Initiative, a commitment by nine high-population countries to reach the Education for All (EFA) goals.

Pakistan participates in EDUCAIDS, a UNESCO-led response to HIV and AIDS.
This initiative aims to address the impact of HIV/AIDS, prevent the spread of HIV and support education systems related to HIV/AIDS learning environments.

Pakistan holds a UNESCO Chair in Distance Education and is home to one UNEVOC centre. As of September 2006, the country has 238 schools participating in UNESCO’s Associated Schools Projects Network (ASPnet).

Pakistan is one of the eight countries which have volunteered to participate in the “One UN” pilot initiative. This will test how the UN family – with its many and diverse agencies - can deliver in a more coordinated way at country level.
