Norway joined UNESCO on November 4, 1946. Norway is a major contributor to UNESCO-led programmes, particularly in the field of education. It has established close and fruitful ties with the UNESCO Institute for Lifelong Learning in the field of adult education and lifelong learning.

In addition, it promotes literacy programmes and non-formal education. As of September 2006, Norway has 56 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
