Honduras has been a Member State of UNESCO since December 16, 1947. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in San José, Costa Rica.
Honduras achieved great progress in the educational field between 1990 and 2000: the adult literacy rate rose from 68.1 percent to 80 percent.
A further commitment is still required for the country to reach the Dakar objectives by 2015. UNESCO is collaborating with Honduran national authorities in all its areas of expertise, particularly as regards reforms to the higher education system.
As of September 2006, Honduras has 31 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
