Nicaragua joined UNESCO on February 22, 1952. The country is covered by the UNESCO Office in San Jose, Costa Rica. The so-called “autonomous schools” in Nicaragua – which are mostly located in poor areas – have attained results on a par with other training centres across the country.

Amongst its various activities in Nicaragua, UNESCO collaborates on a plan aimed at integrating children with disabilities into the country’s school system through its support for the Programmes for Inclusive Schools and Community Support.

As of September 2006, Nicaragua has 13 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
