Portugal joined UNESCO on March 11, 1965. After withdrawing in 1972, it rejoined the Organization on September 11, 1974. Portugal and UNESCO collaborate in several fields and are involved particularly in joint actions in favour of Portuguese-speaking countries, notably in Africa and Timor-Leste.

As of September 2006, Portugal has 57 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
