    Ecuador joined UNESCO on January 22, 1947. Founded on June 6, 1983, the UNESCO Office in Quito operates as the Regional Communication and Information Office for Latin America and the Caribbean, and as a Cluster Office for the Andean region.

    The 2005 Education for All Global Monitoring Report shows that Ecuador has an adult literacy rate of over 91 percent and compulsory schooling for children aged between 5 and 14, while 1.1 of the country’s gross domestic product is allocated to education.

    As of September 2006, Ecuador has 47 schools participating in the UNESCO’s Associated Schools Project Network (ASPnet).
