UNESCO Fosters WSIS Preparation in Viet Nam

27-11-2003 ()
A UNESCO organized Roundtable on the Information Society held last week in Hanoi as part of Viet Nam's preparation for the World Summit on the Information Society provided a good opportunity for the country's stakeholders in the field of ICTs to share views on the Summit and on the shape of the future Information Society of Vietnam.
The event was organized by Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO in collaboration with UNESCO Office Hanoi. The participants of the Roundtable represented various government authorities, business entities, international organizations, non governmental organizations and the media. The wide range of participants reflected the aim of WSIS in mobilizing all actors in the Summit process and the building up of the Information Society.

The importance of easy and open access to information and knowledge was stressed by many speakers. "The Information Society must be people based and be one of diversity, both in content and languages" said Le Manh Hung, Deputy Director at the Department of International Organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affair.

Participants also called for further discussion on the format of the Information Society, the security aspects of Internet, the importance of a good enabling legal framework and the setting of standards. Concerning the build-up of human resources and promotion of ICT-literacy, it was suggested that Viet Nam could call for a setting up of an international funding mechanism for these purposes.

The complete report of the Roundtable with the Roundtable's recommendations on Viet Nam's contribution at the WSIS will soon be published on the web site of the UNESCO Hanoi Office.
