Response to criticism raised on recent nominations on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register

In response to criticism expressed with regard to the recent inscriptions on the UNESCO Memory of the World Register, UNESCO wishes to underscore that the nominations decided upon by the International Advisory Committee of the Memory of the World Programme are in no way intended to celebrate individuals or provide recognition to actions which go counter to UNESCO's fundamental mission to build peace in the minds of women and men.

The Committee is an independent international expert body representing history, archival and library science scholars and practitioners.

Through the Memory of the World Programme, UNESCO is committed "to facilitate preservation of the world's documentary heritage; to assist universal access to documentary heritage: and to increase awareness worldwide of the existence and significance of documentary heritage as a means to build peace and better understanding amongst peoples."

The objectives of the Programme should not be construed in any way so as to associate it with any declaration or position that goes against its fundamental principles and the objectives of promoting tolerance and mutual understanding on the basis of human rights and human dignity.
