Memory of the World, the Treasures that Record our History

The 4,000-year-old Hittite cuneiform tablets from Bogazköy and documents pertaining to The Baltic Way are featured at the start of a new book about the UNESCO’s Memory of the World programme, published by the Organization and Harper Collins. The 607-page volume, Memory of the World, The Treasures that Record our History from 1700 BC to the Present Day, closes with information about the human chain that linked the three Baltic States in their drive for independence on 23 August 1989.

The richly illustrated book provides a description of all entries on UNESCO’s Memory of the World International Register. It marks the 20th anniversary of UNESCO’s programme which was created to preserve and mobilize resources for invaluable documentary heritage kept in libraries, archives and museums across the globe.

The Memory of the World programme, and the book itself, provide important information about the diversity of languages, peoples and knowledge; events, discoveries and inventions, that have influenced humanity from earliest history to the present.
