Biosphere Reserve Information | ||||
KISKUNSÁG |
General Description |
Situated in the Danube-Tisza floodplain in central Hungary, Kiskunság Biosphere Reserve comprises an array of habitats with wetlands (floodplains, swamps, peat lands, wet grasslands and alkali lakes) and dry habitats represented by sandy and alkali grasslands and steppes. Characteristics of the steppes are barren salt patches with highly adapted halophyte plant communities. The alkali lakes of Kiskunság are internationally important nesting and staging grounds of waterfowl during migration. They are therefore inscribed in the list of the Ramsar Convention. Some 750 people live on sparsely distributed farms in this rural area (1976). The biosphere reserve aims to protect the unique landscape of Kiskunság with its flora and fauna, geological and geomorphologic formations. Closely related to this goal is the maintenance of the traditional way of life and farming in the region. Thus, ancient domesticated animal breeds like Mangalica pig, Hungarian grey cattle and Racka sheep are sustained within the biosphere reserve. Visitors of the biosphere reserve learn about the traditional pastoral lifestyle and the flora and fauna in the Kiskunság National Park center and on interpretation trails. |
