Regional Workshop for Green School Action in East Asia: Centered on Teacher Capacity Building in Climate Change Education in Jakarta, Indonesia

UNESCO conducted a regional workshop for Green School Action in East Asia to build teachers’ capacity in Climate Change Education in Jakarta, on 18-20 May 2012. 88 teachers from Indonesia and 15 international experts from six countries in the Asia and Pacific region participated in the workshop.

The regional workshop for Green School Action in East Asia was organized to develop Primary and Secondary school teachers as key practitioners in actual fields to build students with a sense of responsibility for the environment and the society. Participants included 20 principals and 40 teachers from 20 pilot schools which included primary, junior and senior secondary and secondary vocational schools from Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, 20 teachers from Jakarta, 4 teachers from Depok, 4 teachers from Bandung as well as 15 international experts from six countries in the Asia and Pacific region. Key speakers included Mr. Anwar Alsaid, Head of the Education Unit, UNESCO Jakarta, Mr. Sungho Choi, Resident Representative, KOICA – Indonesia Office, Mr. Arief Rachman, Executive Chairman of Indonesian National Commission for UNESCO, Mr. Hameed A. Hakeem, UNESCO Bangkok, Dr. Gogot Suharwoto, Ministry of Education and Culture, Ms. Susy R. Sadikin, SE, M.Sc, Ministry of Environment.

This workshop aimed to benefit pilot Green Schools’ responsible teachers, principals and provincial education authority officers in Banjarmasin, and Science Education/Environmental Science teachers not only in Jakarta/out-of Jakarta but also from other countries in South-East region.
