On 3-6 November 2015, Indonesian researchers, teachers and students participated in a training session on School Safety Inspection designed to empower them to take the lead in assessing the safety of schools against natural hazards during field surveys in their regions. Participants learned to use the VISUS methodology (Visual Inspection for defining the Safety Upgrading Strategies) and surveyed 9 schools in the Bandung City to assess risks. An additional 41 schools in Bandung and 10 schools in Pangandaran area will be assessed in the near future by the trainees.

The VISUS Methodology was developed by UNESCO in partnership with the Safety and Protection Intersectoral Laboratory (SPRINT) of the University of Udine (Italy), along with related tools for risk mitigation, including a mobile application. Thirty-eight lecturers, researchers, practitioners, and students were trained to apply the methodology as part of the adaptation process activities of the project “Building Model for Disaster Resilient City in Indonesia: Tsunami Hazard”, funded by the Indonesian Funds in Trusts (IFIT). Prof. Stefano Grimaz of the University of Udine facilitated the training, with the support of UNESCO experts and members of the Faculty for Civil Engineering and Environmental of Bandung Institute of Technology (FTSL ITB).

The training session was organized on 3-6 November 2015 by the UNESCO Office in Jakarta, in collaboration with UNESCO’s Natural Sciences Sector, SPRINT and FTSL ITB, which hosted the event. It counted with the participation of observers from national and international NGOs, donors and representatives of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture. The Faculty for Civil Engineering and Environmental of Bandung Institute of Technology will oversee the assessment of the remaining 51 school facilities as a follow-up to the training session.
