Regional Science Bureau for Asia and the Pacific Scopes JFIT Assisted CONNECT-Asia MasterClasses

Within the framework of Japan Funds in Trust project titled “COMprehensive Program to Enhance Technology, Engineering and ScieNCE Education (COMPETENCE) in Asia: The Role and Contribution of Higher Education Institutions”, UNESCO Office Jakarta in collaboration with Telkom University successfully conducted the MasterClass Workshop from 12 to 13 September 2014. The event was held in Savoy Homann Bidakara Hotel in Bandung, Indonesia.

Participants from a number of Asia-Pacific countries discussed the development of Masterclass content and application of CONNECT-Asia e-learning platform to synthesize and share best practices and e-learning through a number of MasterClasses in the areas of competencies of UNESCO’s especially Man and Biosphere and World Natural Heritage recognized sites. A total of 30 participants from different National Research and Education Network (NREN) attended this workshop.

The objectives of the meeting were to consolidate e-learning experiences among all stakeholders for effective operation of CONNECT Asia network, to increase access to quality education tools and resources through the use of information and communication technologies networks and to deliver MasterClasses to a wider audience, beyond those directly participating in the project.

A key outcome of the meeting over 15 MasterClass proposals and concept of infrastructure development to effectively operate the MasterClass across the CONNECT-Asia network. Some of the proposed areas are listed below:

  • Community Based Flood Management
  • SEAMS-UNESCO School in Mathematics
  • Handling Big Data
  • Master Class on Sustainable Development
  • Living laboratories
  • Community Sustainable Livelihoods
  • Creative Approaches to Connecting UNESCO Biosphere Reserves
