UN@70 - UNESCO World Heritage Represents Indonesia in UN70 “TURN THE WORLD UN BLUE” Campaign

On 24 October 2015, more than 150 monuments, buildings, museum, bridges and iconic buildings in more than 45 countries around the world were lit up blue, the official color of the United Nations, to mark the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. In Indonesia, National Monument (Monas) and Borobudur Temple Complex, one of the key UNESCO World Heritage Sites, participated in this global campaign.

UNESCO Office Jakarta in consultation with the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Jakarta and in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education and Culture and PT. Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur, Prambanan & Ratu Boko (PT. TWC) actively supported the participation of Borobudur in “Turn the World UN Blue” campaign,

On the evening of 24 October from 7 to 9 pm, Borobudur was turned blue with 10 20,000 watt lights. The special event was attended by Mr. Marsis Sutopo (Head of Borobudur Conservation Office), Ms. Chrisnamurti (Head of Borobudur Unit of PT. TWC), representatives of UNESCO Office Jakarta, staff of Borobudur Conservation Office and PT. TWC, as well as a number of journalists and photographers. 

Ms. Retno L.P Marsudi, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Republic Indonesia, expressed her support to the participation of Borobudur Temple in this “Turn the World UN Blue” campaign as this auspicious occasion will also highlight the joint 70th anniversary of the Indonesian independence and the UN. It will certainly be an excellent occasion to reflect on the mutual cooperation and partnership between the Republic of Indonesia and the United Nations.

Mr. Shahbaz Khan, Director UNESCO Office Jakarta, said that the selection of Borobudur as part of UN70 “Turn the World UN Blue” campaign highlights UNESCO fundamental principles of promoting peace and sustainable development through world heritage sites that represent the authenticity, environment, scientific conservation, identity, and history of the peoples. This year also marks the 70th anniversary of UNESCO.

By participating in this event, the Government of Indonesia is very proud that Borobudur is acknowledged as one of the most iconic monuments in the world and it will continue to promote Borobudur as one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Marsis Sutopo, the Head of Borobudur Conservation Office stated.

Mr. Douglas Broderick, UN Resident Coordinator for Indonesia, praised the participation of Monas and Borobudur in this global campaign. He stated that this global event is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate and strengthen the close-knit relationship between the Government of Indonesia and the United Nations.

“To mark this anniversary, monuments and buildings across the world are being illuminated in UN blue. As we shine a light on this milestone anniversary, let us reaffirm our commitment to a better and brighter future for all,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in his message for the Day.
