Call for candidatures -Doctoral Scholarships in “HERITAGE STUDIES”, by the International Graduate School of Heritage Studies at Cottbus University, Germany

The Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus offers an interdisciplinary PhD programme in Heritage Studies that is aimed at national as well as international prospective students.

The programme is a consequent further development of the highly successful Master’s degree in World Heritage Studies, implemented in 1999. This programme aims to develop, both qualitatively and quantitatively, international and terdisciplinary research on the protection and use of the heritage of mankind in all its representations. The graduate school collaborates closely with the network of UNESCO Chairs working on the issues of heritage.

The scholarship is tenable for up to 3 years for the completion of a PhD dissertation.
Scholarships are initially limited until 31.12.2010. Depending on budget allocation as well as on the programme’s approval through the Brandenburg Ministry of Science, the scholarship shall be extended for respectively 1 year for a maximum extension of two years (i.e. scholarships are awarded until 31.12.2011 and 31.12.2012, respectively).

Dissertation topics should address one of the following five research areas broadly defined:

  • Tangible Heritage in the Context of Global Change
  • Intangible Heritage/ Religion/ Identity/ Diversity
  • Sustainable Protection and Use of Heritage in the Context of Innovative Conceptions of Heritage
  • Cultural Landscapes
  • Mediation of Heritage Through Innovative Technologies / Memory of the World


Applications for research areas 1, 3 and 4 as well as in cross-cutting research topics shall be particularly considered.
