General Description | Doupkata Biosphere Reserve is situated in the Rhodope Mountains in the Pazardzhik Region in south Bulgaria and covers an area of 1929,3 hectares between 600 and 1350 meters above sea level. It was established in 1956 to protect the beautiful, almost virgin landscape and forests and was declared a biosphere reserve in 1977. The reserve comprises mostly pine forest (Pinus silvestris) with some stands of beech (Fagus sylvatica), silver fir (Abies alba), oak (Quercus dalechampii) and Austrian pine (P. nigra). The fauna is diverse and includes brown bear (Ursus arctos), wild cat (Felis silvestries), pine marten (Martes martes) and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra). Apart from some selective cutting and fires in the past this site is mostly undisturbed by man. The biosphere reserve is currently under revision. | |||
