© UNESCO,

A workshop on "Incorporating elements of intangible cultural heritage concerning national singing in the existing subject area on “Musical Culture” will be held in Tashkent from 19 to 20 February 2014.

The workshop is organized by the UNESCO Office in Tashkent and the Ministry of Public Education of Uzbekistan with the support of the UNESCO Regional Bureau in Bangkok.

Safeguarding and transmission of cultural heritage from generation to generation contributes to the development of cultural values and, through it, the country's sustainable development. Uzbekistan possess a rich intangible cultural heritage, which is an integral part of the life and culture of the Uzbek people. Over centuries indigenous cultural traditions were transmitted from a generation to another, thus contributing to the development of inter-generational dialogue and the creation of rich and unique oral and musical traditions of the country.

The workshop is organized within the framework of the UNESCO project "Promoting intangible cultural heritage for educators to reinforce education for sustainable development" funded by the Japanese Funds-in Trust, which aims to develop teaching materials on intangible cultural heritage for further incorporating into the school curriculum in order to reinforce cultural diversity as a core part of sustainability.

The purpose of the workshop is to equip teachers of the pilot schools of the project with the necessary knowledge and skills to teach national singing in the framework of the "Musical Culture» classes.
