Education

UNESCO is the United Nations’ specialized agency working in the field of education. UNESCO’s core mandate is to bring education to all, based on the principle that education is a universal human right. Its close links with education ministries and other partners in 193 countries place UNESCO in a key position to press for action. UNESCO believes that education is key to social and economic development. We work for a sustainable world with just societies that value knowledge, promote a culture of peace, celebrate diversity and defend human rights, achieved by providing Education for All (EFA).

In order to achieve this, UNESCO provides international leadership to create learning societies with educational opportunities for all populations and provides expertise and fosters partnerships to strengthen national educational leadership and the capacity of countries to offer quality education for all. UNESCO works as an intellectual leader, an honest broker and clearing house for ideas, propelling both countries and the international community to accelerate progress towards these goals. It facilitates the development of partnerships and monitors progress, in particular by publishing an annual Global Monitoring Report that tracks the achievements of countries and the international community towards the six Education for All goals.

The UNESCO Office in Tashkent is working to assist the Government of Uzbekistan to improve the quality and access to education by providing technical advice, setting standards, launching innovative projects and networking. The education unit of the UNESCO Office focuses on enhancing the national education sector by strengthening the capacity of teacher training institutions, improvement of curricula ; training opportunities and learning materials for teachers. To this end, UNESCO promotes:

  • The accellaration and stock-taking of the progress made towards achieving the internationally agreed development goals - MDG2, EFA, DESD, and elaborating visionary policies and plans for education in Uzbekistan beyond 2015.
  • The implementation of the Education Sector Plan of the Republic of Uzbekistan for 2013-2017.
  • Competency-framework for teachers for the integration of ICT into teaching and learning processes with the aim of improving the quality of learning process.
  • Evidence-based policy-making, including through the introduction of the Education Management Information Systems (EMIS), by means of which policy makers can retrieve accurate data from all levels of education.
  • Strengthening the quality of technical and vocational education and training in Uzbekistan through curriculum review and teacher-training and by promoting interactive and project-based learning.
  • The quality of education in specific areas of relevance in the 21st century, such as Education for Sustainable Development, media and information literacy or preventive education against HIV and AIDS.
