Closure of the Contest for the Permanent Memorial to honour the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade

The International Competition for the creation of a Permanent Memorial at the United Nations to honour the victims of slavery and the transatlantic slave trade is now closed.

UNESCO and the Permanent Memorial Committee warmly thank all the artists who participated in this competition and submitted project proposals "to enshrine the legacy of millions of African captives whose untold stories, memories and contribution to humanity forever changed the world’s societies".

More than 300 projects have been recieved from over 80 countries. They will now undergo a selection process according to the Guidelines and Rules established for this competition.

The winner will be annouced in early April 2012.
