The conference will bring together experts and leaders of national and global memory projects to share best practices and insights. It will also feature a one-day choreographed experience (led by practitioners of Singapore's memory initiatives) on how memories are experienced, relived and captured within the specific context of Singapore. Concurrent to the conference, the experience component is a virtual part, which will leverage on new and social media to engage before, during and after the events the participants and the wider community.

In conjunction with the conference, the Singapore Memory Project (SMP) will be launched on 10 October 2010. SMP is a nation-wide collaborative initiative facilitated by the National Library Board of Singapore in partnership and cooperation with other institutions including libraries, heritage agencies, research institutions, amongst others. It is envisioned to be a sustained long-term national knowledge initiative to create the foundations for Singapore's cultural and intellectual memory to be collected, organised, preserved, and promoted for research and discovery.

SMP will build a national digital collection of knowledge assets about Singapore, in a bid to ensure that the Singapore story is collected and preserved to prevent the permanent loss of the nation's heritage, national roots and nation development. 101010 was chosen as the title of the event as its binary nature reflects the digital and modern approaches of the Singapore Memory Project.

The conference is open to researchers, library professionals, heritage and museum industry players or individuals and organizations that believe in the value of creating and preserving cultural and intellectual memory for future generations. The preservation of heritage is the objective of UNESCO's Memory of the World Programme which is one of the global activities to be presented during the conference. UNESCO launched the Memory of the World Programme to guard against collective amnesia calling upon the preservation of the valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world, ensuring their wide dissemination. The Programme is intended to protect documentary heritage, and helps networks of experts to exchange information and raise resources for preservation of and access to documentary material.
