Cuban ballerina and choreographer Alicia Alonso is considered one of the most outstanding ballerinas of the 20th century. Prima ballerina assoluta, she inspires and guides new generations of dancers in her country and abroad. With her own style, she has left her mark on the international world of dance.

Alicia Alonso was designated UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for her outstanding contribution to the development, preservation and popularization of classical dance, through which she has promoted the ideals of UNESCO and the fellowship of the world’s peoples and cultures.

Since her designation in June 2002, she has concerned herself with programmes and projects on basic education and on the preservation of tangible and intangible heritage.
