Stephen Lewis opens UNESCO's CAPACITY DEVELOPMENT AND TRAINING PROGRAMME IN GENDER MAINSTREAMING ( September 2005) The Division for Gender Equality of the Bureau of Strategic Planning (BSP/GE) launches a house-wide capacity-development and training programme in gender mainstreaming. Key note address by Stephen Lewis, U.N. Special envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa

 
The objectives of the programme are to:

(i) Improve staff understanding of gender concepts and gender equality issues in relation to UNESCO’s domains;

(ii) Ensure the integration of women’s empowerment and gender equality perspectives in programme and project implementation, monitoring and evaluation with a view to promoting gender equality in all UNESCO activities and programmes;

(iii) Enhance the capacities of staff to help contribute towards the achievement of gender-related EFA and Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

Given the centrality of women and gender-related issues for the achievement of the EFA Goals and the MDGs, the Education Sector will be the pilot sector for this training programme. The Section for Primary Education, Gender Focal Point for the Education Sector, is co-organizing this training programme.

Opening session with keynote address by Stephen Lewis, Special Envoy of the United Nations on HIV/AIDS in Africa (5 September 2005 from 15:00-17:00, ROOM II).
