The status and entitlements of professionals at UNESCO

Because international professional careers at UNESCO are international appointments, the Organization pays professionals a salary corresponding to the special status of United Nations staff, together with other benefits which take account of international mobility and family responsibilities.
The following information is provided by way of indication. However, actual employment contracts of staff are based on the UNESCO Staff Rules and Regulations, which remain the definitive source of any legal and administrative interpretation.

You will normally be given a renewable, fixed-term contract of two years on appointment. The first 12 months are considered to be a probationary period enabling us to evaluate your performance and professional conduct.

All appointments are subject to the results of a medical examination.

SALARY AND BENEFITS:

UNESCO pays you a salary in line with your professional level as well as benefits which take account of your dependants and the cost of living at your duty station.

  • Base salary
The base salary, which is determined by the post’s grade mentioned in the vacancy notice and by the existence of any dependants, is the same throughout the United Nations system. It is expressed in U.S. dollars and is payable mainly in local currency.

  • Post adjustment
The base salary is supplemented by a post adjustment which varies according to the cost of living in the duty station and the exchange rate of the United States dollar. The post adjustment, set by the United Nations as a percentage of the base salary, guarantees staff members the same purchasing power in every duty station by stabilizing the monthly salary paid in local currency. For example, if you work at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, your monthly salary in euros will remain stable despite any variations in the exchange rate between the dollar and the euro.

  • Hardship allowance
At some duty stations, a hardship allowance linked to living and working conditions is also paid.

  • Tax exemption
Salaries, grants and allowances paid by UNESCO are normally exempt from income tax.

  • OTHER BENEFITS

As a UNESCO staff member you are entitled to other benefits which enable you to carry out your duties properly in good conditions and provide you more generally with a good quality of life.

    International mobility

  • Travel expenses
If you are recruited internationally, UNESCO covers travel expenses for you and your dependants from the place of recruitment to your assigned duty station. Dependants whose travel expenses may be payable are the staff member’s spouse and children, provided that they meet certain conditions.

  • Removal expenses
An appointment of two years or more entitles you to transportation of your personal effects and household goods. Once you are appointed, you will be informed of the particular conditions of this benefit.

  • Assignment grant
To help you get established at your duty station, you and your dependants will receive an assignment grant on arrival.

  • Rental subsidy
Under certain circumstances, you may be entitled to a rental subsidy.

  • Repatriation grant
If you leave the country of your duty station after separation from service at UNESCO, you may be entitled to a repatriation grant payable on the basis of your number of years of service.

    Help with family commitments

  • Family allowances
You are entitled to a family allowance if you have a legitimate, natural or legally adopted dependant child under the age of 18 years or, if in full-time attendance at a school or university (or similar educational institution), under the age of 21, for whom you ensure the main and continuing support.

  • Education grant for your children
Under the education grant, the amount of which cannot go beyond a fixed ceiling, you are reimbursed up to 75 per cent of the educational expenses and the cost of textbooks for each dependant child who is in full-time attendance at a school or university or a similar educational establishment. The education grant is payable for each dependant child until he or she obtains a university diploma.

    Leave

  • Calculation of leave time
Annual leave accrues at the rate of two and one-half days per month.

  • Home leave
If you have been recruited internationally, once every two years (and in certain cases, once a year) the Organization normally covers the cost of travel to and from the country of your recognized home for you and your dependants.

    Social security and retirement pension

  • Health insurance
You will be affiliated to the UNESCO Medical Benefits Fund. Your recognized dependants may also be covered by the Fund. A monthly contribution will be deducted from your salary at source.

  • Risk cover
You will be compensated by the Organization in the event of injury or illness attributable to the performance of official duties. In the event of death in similar circumstances your family will also be compensated.

  • Retirement pension
Upon appointment, you will become a member of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, which will provide you with a competitive retirement pension. A compulsory contribution will be deducted from your monthly salary.
