The status and entitlements of General Service staff members at UNESCO

A career as a member of the General Service staff at UNESCO brings with it a salary corresponding to the special status of United Nations staff, together with other benefits related to your family responsibilities.

The information below is provided by way of indication. However, actual employment contracts of staff are based on the UNESCO Staff Rules and Regulations, which remain the definitive source of any legal and administrative interpretation. For Field Offices staff members, some entitlements are locally adapted.

10003048_250.jpgYOUR APPOINTMENT

You will normally be given a renewable fixed-term contract of two years on appointment. The first 12 months are considered to be a probationary period enabling us to evaluate your performance and professional behaviour.
All appointments are subject to the results of a medical examination.

YOUR SALARY AND BENEFITS

UNESCO pays you a salary in line with your professional level and the cost of living at your duty station.

  • Your salary
Your salary, corresponding to the grade of the post in the vacancy notice, is common to the United Nations system. The guiding principle consists in setting the salary at a level that is at least equivalent to the best salary in the local civil service. It is expressed in the local currency in the duty station and takes account of whether you have dependants or not.

  • Language allowance
You will receive a language allowance if you pass tests showing that you have a thorough knowledge of one or two of the official languages of the Organization (Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian), in addition to your main language.

  • Tax exemption
UNESCO salaries, grants and allowances are normally exempt from income tax.

  • OTHER BENEFITS

As a staff member of UNESCO you are entitled to other benefits which enable you to carry out your duties properly in good conditions and provide you more generally with a good quality of life.

    Help with family commitments
You are entitled to a family allowance if you have a legitimate, natural or legally adopted dependant child under the age of 18 years or, if in full-time attendance at a school or university (or similar educational institution), under the age of 21, for whom you ensure the main and continuing support.

    Leave
Annual leave accrues at the rate of two and one-half days per month.

    Social security and retirement pension

  • Health insurance
You will be affiliated to the UNESCO Medical Benefits Fund. Your recognized dependants may also be covered by the Fund. A monthly contribution will be deducted from your salary at source.

  • Risk cover
You will be compensated by the Organization in the event of injury or illness attributable to the performance of official duties. In the event of death in similar circumstances, your family will also be compensated.

  • Retirement pension
Upon appointment, you will become a member of the United Nations Joint Staff Pension Fund, which will provide you with a competitive retirement pension. A compulsory contribution will be deducted from your monthly salary.
