 Statement by the Director-General of UNESCO, Koïchiro Matsuura on the second anniversary of Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004
Two years ago, on 26 December 2004, a devastating tsunami in the Indian Ocean took more than 200,000 lives and caused billions of dollars of material damage. The extent of the destruction was largely due to the absence of a regional tsunami warning system. In response to this, I immediately issued a statement that UNESCO would do its utmost to put such a system in place for the region by mid-2006. More |
Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions will enter into force on 18 March 2007

 The Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, adopted by UNESCO’s General Conference in October 2005, will enter into force on 18 March 2007, three months after the deposit of the 30th instrument of ratification on 18 December at UNESCO. As of 15 December, 22 instruments of ratification had been registered*. On the 18th, another 13 countries**, as well as the European Community, deposited their instrument at the Organization’s Headquarters, bringing the total number of ratifications received to 35. Director-General announces laureates of UNESCO King Hamad Bin Isa Al-Khalifa Prize

International Convention against Doping in Sport

 The International Convention against Doping in Sport will enter into force on 1 February, 2007, after its ratification today by Luxembourg and in accordance with paragraph 1 Article 37 of the text, which stipulates that “this Convention shall enter into force on the first day of the month following the expiration of a period of one month after the date of deposit of the thirtieth instrument of ratification, acceptance, approval or accession.” More |

UNESCO and HP launch project to counter brain drain in Africa

 UNESCO and Hewlett-Packard have launched a joint project to help reduce brain drain in Africa by providing grid computing* technology to universities in Algeria, Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal and Zimbabwe. Mudenge, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education, took part in the launch of the “Piloting Solutions for Reversing Brain Drain into Brain Gain for Africa” project, at UNESCO Headquarters on 20 November. Winners of Mondialogo School Contest proclaimed

 A team of students from schools in Indonesia and Italy has won the 2006 Mondialogo School Contest for raising money to provide free schooling to Indonesian children living off garbage dumps. Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Programme awards 26 research grants

Twenty five finalist teams chosen for Mondialogo School Contest 2005/2006

UNESCO Mission reports on war damage to cultural heritage in Lebanon
