  • His Excellency Mr Valdas Adamkus joins the family of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors

    06-10-2003 1:30 pm Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, Director-General of UNESCO, designated H. E. Mr Valdas Adamkus, former President of Lithuana, as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Construction of Knowledge Societies at a nomination ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters on 29 September 2003, held in conjuction with the inauguration of the exhibition “Building Knowledge Societies”

    H. E. Mr Valdas Adamkus was so designated “with a view to benefiting for the construction of knowledge societies from his wisdom and extensive experience in many of UNESCO’s areas of concern, in particular promotion of social development, cultural diversity, dialogue and international cooperation”.

    “…During your tenure as President of Lithuania, relations with UNESCO deepened and developed fresh impetus, especially in the fields of cultural heritage, bioethics and the dialogue among cultures and among civilizations. Through our meeting, I have had the chance to become better acquainted with your lifelong work and to witness your deep personal commitment to action for peace and tolerance, values which stand at the heart of UNESCO’s mission…

    “…As UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for the Construction of Knowledge Societies, your main mission will be to support the Organization’s action in this vital field by bringing key issues before Heads of State and high-level decision-makers and by encouraging countries to adopt appropriate institutions, policies and legislation for building knowledge societies…” said
    Mr Matsuura in his address during the nomination ceremony .

    In 1988 H.E. Mr Valdas Adamkus received an international environmental award for outstanding achievements in the international arena.

    H.E. Mr Valdas Adamkus was awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by Vilnius University in 1989. The American universities of Indiana and Illinois also awarded him honorary doctorates for his contribution to the cleaning of the Great Lakes and for other environmental projects.

    Mr Arturas Paulauskas, Chairman of the “Seimas” (Lithuanian Parliament), Mrs Eleonora Mitrofanova, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation, H. E. Mrs Aziza Bennani, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Morocco to UNESCO, H.E. Mrs Ina Marciulionyté, Ambassador, Permanent Delegate of Lithuania to UNESCO, Mrs Asta Dirmaité, Secretary-General of the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO, Mr Madanjeet Singh, UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, and Mr Alain Husson-Dumoutier and Mr Serguei Markarov, UNESCO Artists for Peace, attended the nomination ceremony.
