HIV and AIDS Preventive Education The recently published manual is based on the premise that teachers are, potentially, the most effective disseminators of information to large numbers of people in a community. Often a community’s knowledge of issues mirrors the knowledge of the teachers themselves. Teachers are respected members of the society as well as important role models, especially for young people. Teachers yield a lot of influence in communities.
Educating teachers, therefore, is a vital step in educating communities. The recently published manual will help teacher educators prepare the teachers for that task. The goal of the training programme offered in the manual is to equip teacher Educators for their difficult task. The manual aims to broaden their knowledge about HIV and AIDS, and to help them develop positive attitudes, values, skills and practices related to its prevention and control. It entails vital advice to programme facilitators such as achieving the best possible responses from participants.
The manual goes beyond the borders of Namibia. Teacher educators and policy makers from Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland and Zimbabwe participated by commenting on the draft manual. This was done in a sub-regional workshop which took place in Windhoek in February 2004. This manual will prove a valuable reference for teacher Educators in Sub-Saharan Africa. Gamsberg Macmillan contributed in creating this manual. More |
