UNESCO Recruitment for an Assistant Programme Specialist in Education under and Appointment for Limited Duration

Post Title: Assistant Programme Specialist in Education
Duration: 9 months (with a possibility of extension), starting October 15, 2010
Deadline for submission of candidatures: September 21, 2010

Basic purpose:
  • contribute to the execution of extrabudgetary projects in the Windhoek cluster Member States;
  • be part of an interdisciplinary team in the office;
  • in collaboration with ED stakeholders and with technical guidance from HQ Programme Divisions, the Regional Bureau for Education and the Director/Windhoek until the P-4 in Education report for duty in the office, the incumbent will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Undertake coordination, monitoring, management and reporting functions pertaining to the implementation of the project “Advancing Education for All (EFA) in the Southern Africa region”, including;
  • Maintaining contacts with stakeholders in the participating countries;
  • Coordinate the organization of Stakeholder consultation meetings of EFA in Malawi and Angola, including follow-up on proposals, contract and activity monitoring, timely submission of reports;
  • Coordinate the organization of sub-regional stakeholder meeting to review the completed activities at national level and formulate recommendations on the way forward;
  • Production of a publication, a sub-regional report reflecting the activities conducted, results achieved and recommendations formulated;
  • Maintain strong relationship with donor for future collaboration;
  • Undertake coordination, monitoring, management and reporting functions pertaining to the implementation of the project “Leadership and Skills training for Under-privileged Groups and Youths in Ohangwena Region”, including:
  • Coordination, monitoring and follow-up on all skills training programmes conducted, including:
  • Monitoring and follow-up on contracts with service providers;
  • Coordinate the second round of skills training programmes;
  • Maintaining contact with stakeholders and the donor;
  • Provide support to the relevant government units to mainstream the programmes into government activities in a sustainable manner;
  • Maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders, partners and the donor;
  • Preparation of reports;
  • Any other activities as assigned by the Director or supervisor.

    Profile/Minimum Requirements:
  • Advanced university degree, preferably in a related field;
  • at least 2 years relevant experience in the field of education, at least 1 year of relevant experience at the international level and in a multicultural setting;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Good IT skills;
  • Excellent knowledge of English and knowledge of French would be an asset;
  • Ability to work in a team and meet multiple deadlines;
  • demonstrated ability to manage educational projects an asset;
  • work experience at UNESCO or another UN agency in the field, an asset;
  • knowledge of the southern African context an asset.
